HELSINKI, April 21, 2021 – Rightware, leading provider of automotive user interface (UI) tools and services, announced that its Kanzi software plays a key role in the autostereoscopic 3D display developed by international mobility supplier Continental, used in automotive production since 2020.
Continental’s advanced display solution provides real-time visualization of key driving information in the driver’s line-of-sight in full 3D without the need for special glasses. To implement this product requiring advanced software and hardware technology, Continental chose to use Rightware’s Kanzi, which offers a ready-made and production-quality autostereoscopic solution.
The 3D effect is created by presenting each eye with a slightly different image of the instrument panel. The viewer’s brain combines these two images and interprets as a true three-dimensional space. While creating this effect for a static viewer is quite straightforward, real-life, dynamic situations are more difficult. As the driver’s head moves, the effect is lost unless the system can compensate for the changing viewing angle.
To solve this challenge, Continental’s system includes a camera and a software algorithm to track the exact position of the driver’s eyes and sends this information to the Kanzi system that controls drawing on the screen. This information is sent to Kanzi 60 times per second, and Rightware’s software updates the drawing parameters and renders each frame in real time to compensate for eye movement and preserve the 3D effect.
“Enhanced 3D display-technology is not only bringing a new wow-factor into the cockpit; with the right content it also creates a more intuitive interaction between driver and vehicle and thus enhances driving safety. We are very happy that our two companies can contribute to a better user experience and safer driving environment by bringing together our technologies. This inspires us to push for further joint solutions making future mobility safer, more digital and more joyful,” states Ulrich Lüders, Director Strategy & Portfolio of Continental's Human Machine Interface Business Unit.
“This 3D Automotive Display product from Continental is an outstanding example of bleeding edge technology used to deliver a better user experience for the driver. The product combines the best that the two companies have to offer – Continental’s advanced hardware and systems expertise together with Rightware’s leading user interface software are a perfect match. This combination enabled the OEM customer to launch its flagship car model with a signature UI” said Freddie Geier, CEO of Rightware.
