Future mobility trends are changing the way we interact with vehicles. While increasing assistance and automation may change the roles of drivers and passengers over time, more and more features in cars require easy and well-structured operation to minimize distraction. What's more – now ubiquitous smartphones and tablets have shaped the habits of customers towards user experience and quick update cycles.
At the same time, demands on testing and validation are rising as well. Manual testing alone is not enough to cover the necessary depth and width of tests for all-digital user interfaces. Automated testing is necessary to get new complex systems to the market on time and in budget.
An easy-to-use and flexible approach to development and validation of in-vehicle HMIs is therefore more important than ever. This is where Magna Telemotive’s reference HMI – with built-in support for Rightware’s Kanzi UI design and development software - and its validation with Telemotive Test Automation (TTA) support HMI developers with maximum flexibility and easy handling.
With its open architecture, Magna Telemotive’s Kanzi-based reference HMI is designed to make development as easy and straightforward as possible. It allows easy adjustments to meet customer requirements, such as implementation of different graphics engines or programming languages. The integrated code generator keeps manual programming at a minimum and again makes the development process more efficient.
As we developed this HMI, we found Kanzi’s big advantage over other development platforms is its focus on automotive HMI development close to series production. Our learning curve with Kanzi was very quick, and it was easy and straightforward to import graphical assets and implement interaction control. Another handy feature is Kanzi’s live preview allowing real-time review of changes during the development process.
On the validation side, Telemotive Test Automation (TTA) allows flexible and quick creation of test cases. In this case, TTA reads back and verifies the graphical output of the Kanzi HMI via image recognition. An open source Python OCR package serves as text control; it reads out screenshots and compares them to the specifications. A clearly structured test report makes the results easy to understand and revision-proof at the same time.
