Millions of vehicles will be powered by Android Automotive OS in the coming years. The entry of Android-enabled services in vehicles is opening many new opportunities for OEMs to enrich their service and customer experience offering. Android OS units can be updated over-the-air (OTA), keeping infotainment systems and applications up-to-date even as the car ages. The users and also the OEMs will benefit from the fact that new services are always available.

The range of automotive services and applications is almost endless, and this brings challenges to OEMs. Who will control what services and applications are used in the vehicles, and when? How can we make sure that using services while driving will not become a safety issue? How can OEMs control their strong brand image? Developing good software takes a lot of time and money, and this is where Bittium can help cut down the development time for solutions powered by Android Automotive. Bittium’s solutions and expertise in Android, enriched with Rightware’s Kanzi tools and services will allow OEMs to utilize new services faster and more cost-effectively.

Managing Brand Identity While Controlling Features

When an automaker chooses to implement Android Automotive without Google services (GAS), Bittium's application management solution can provide an application installation client for the Android Automotive IVI system. Device management includes application whitelisting and control of Android application installation, giving the OEM full control over what is available for the vehicle. By managing application downloads for the vehicles, the carmaker stays in control of visual brand identity and can also sell post-purchase feature upgrades from directly within the vehicle. The application library user interface is seamlessly integrated with the overall IVI experience and provides the user easy access to any Android application, whether locally installed or available for download on the application library cloud server.

Developing the OEM brand for the future

OEMs need innovative and safe ways to integrate technologies in the digital cockpit. Data privacy for both OEMs and their customers will continue to be a major topic in the coming years. Bittium’s expertise in security solutions and Android platforms, combined with the graphics and connectivity features available in the Kanzi toolchain, offers a solid platform on which to build future HMI & IVI environments.

It is said that brand is seen as a company's most valuable asset, and this is especially true in the automotive industry. The brand represents the face of the company, the recognizable logo, and even the slogan. In many cases, the company is often referred to by its brand, and they become one and the same. For these reasons, it is important to uphold the integrity of the brand, and we are here to do that.

Demo Design for IVI and Cluster Displays

Our demo design for IVI and cluster displays was built with the Kanzi toolchain and Kanzi Reference HMI from Rightware. With Kanzi, we were able to implement fast new Android IVI and cluster launchers and other relevant Android Kanzi services in two individual Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 HW platforms running Android Automotive OS developed by Bittium.
